![]() capitol theater West Colubmia, TX I enjoyed Texas History when I was in school, but my memory is a tricky thing, pushing things out to make way for useless trivia. So it was no surprise to learn that the city of West Colubia rang a dull peal I couldn't quite recognize as we drove through on the way to Matagorda. Back in October of 1836, this little burg was simply known as Columbia and was home to the first Congress of the Republic of Texas. When triggers help me recall little bits of information like this I can overwhelm myself by thinking about all the other history this young country has. I then proceed to drown in the fact that other countries have even MORE history to remember and consider. I love history, but historically I forget which undermines this whole remembering business. But for reasons I will never understand, I can remember tons of useless information at the drop of a hat, usually fictional stuff e.g. movie quotes. Of course I could use this to my advantage and watch historical movies all the time but I don't trust their accuracy. And the only thing worse than forgetting is remembering wrong. | |
