a thought continued, complete or otherwise

secret weapon Deer Park, TX

First off, huge congratulations to Susan Burnstine for snagging Best in Show at Photo L.A. 2010. Her imagery is pure magic done the 'old-fashioned' way with cobbled cameras and intuition.
Following that train of thought, my buddy Tread throws down some food for thought regarding the idea of 'contemporary photography' and what that means in the 'digital' age. A seminal argument that keeps on giving and refuses to die. Which is good as it serves as a springboard to continue to look at and into photographs.
My photographic thought above will follow as a non sequitur which only seems appropriate. When I think of Alternating Weekends as a body of work I think of it as reactionary. A response to the activities and relationship with my son. Yes, there are plenty of 'wait, do that again's and 'remember that time's but they're all in response to initially unsolicited action. Then there's this. An image that popped into my head late at night in a wake-sleep TV stupor, probably formulated while flipping channels between 2001:A Space Odyssey and Samson and Delilah or some such nonsense. I felt compelled to stage it and I got what I wanted but I have no idea what it means to me much less anyone else therefore I question it. An image I'll sit with for a while to see if it sticks, it reminds me of my friend Maura's exchange with a professor in college. When asked what she was feeling when taking a particular photograph that was up for critique, she responded with 'I felt like I wanted an 'A''. I can't say that's what I was thinking in this moment, I can't say I was thinking about anything except hand placement, angle of view, and the original thought that put this image in my mind. But her response feels fitting as a reaction. A reaction to an incomplete thought.
