![]() family statue Houston via Deer Park, TX An odd personal meme came full circle recently. This object belonged to my dad. I remember it vividly as it moved around the house while we were growing up. The dust settling into the grooves building up a decades worth of antiquing. The red eyes never seemed to dull. Eventually it moved into my room for awhile, through high school and part of college if I remember correctly. From there I just can't remember where it went. Over the years I believed it to have made it's way to the trash. As I've been scanning in the family photos, I've noticed the cobra's presence repeatedly. A photographic meme of sorts; sometimes prominent, sometimes subtle. Over the last two weeks we've emptied out my mother's storage units to save money, get rid of unwanted rubbish and make way for her to eventually move back down into our childhood home. As we were moving all this...stuff...I couldn't believe some of the things that I had bothered to put into the storage units in the first place. It was a hectic, tumultuous time and everything was loaded up and moved into storage without much thought. So as we slowly go through the detritus, separating the trash from treasure, I've come to the frustrating realization of what was paid to hold this stuff in a climate-controlled facility. (Side note: this is developing slowly into a photo project). As I was marveling over the ridiculousness of boxes of junk mail and a box of broken crayons, I opened a sturdy box revealing the top of this statue surrounded by other flotsam and jetsam. I did a sort of dance and yelled something or other to the effect of 'I found it!'. Not nearly as profound as 'Eureka!' but joyful nonetheless. So, full circle and all that, coiled up and hissin'. | |
